The fish board is the backbone of an Israeli kiddush. Herring in several forms, smoked salmon, dips, crackers — it is what is on the table when people come out of davening, and it is what gets eaten at shalosh seudos when nobody wants a hot meal.
As a gift it is a slightly knowing one: it says you have been to this kind of kiddush and you know what actually goes. It is parve or dairy depending on the board, which makes it easier to place on a Shabbos table than a meat platter. Kashrut is on each store's page, and the delivery date you pick at checkout should be the Friday, not the Shabbos.
